FLOTATION WALLS

dublab.com

I’ve been listening to it enough lately that I feel like I ought to direct more attention to it. Dublab had a great deal to do with me kind of growing a brain a couple years back, so it’s got a special place in my heart.

It’s an internet radio station out in Los Angeles. Deejays (and sometimes bands) record sets periodically, contributing to a collection of current sessions that stream 24/7. They dig up lots of older stuff, often from other parts of the world (one of them seems to make regular trips to Brazil and India). You also get firsthand exposure to some great electronic artists’ brains - Daedelus, Flying Lotus, Nobody, and Gaslamp Killer are all regular contributors, sometimes mixing together stuff from their records in new ways (and sometime before they’re released).

Another great thing is sometimes you’ll hear a song you’re familiar with in an unusual context and it will make you more interested in it. Or you’ll catch yourself being really into a western song or something.

Anyway, I love it because you can switch it on and you’ll hear something brilliant at least 80% of the time. It’s great for stretching your brain while you cook. It can definitely get silly, though - I recall trying to entertain a ladyfriend a few years back when a crew of reggaeton dudes evidently took over the studio and kept triggering this stupid loud airhorn sample every three seconds. If you should happen to get a bad first impression, I urge you to leave it on for a few hours while you garden or something. I guarantee you’ll hear at least one thing that pricks your ears (and most of the time they post playlists on the website, so you can actually FIND what you hear!).

If they’re playing crap, you can switch over to Carlos’ radio show for a while (click play button or you’re hearing something else). Or type ‘Kelly Clarkson’ into Pandora. Or call your mother.
